A suicide bombing attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, has resulted in the deaths of six people and injuries to 13 others. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, September 2, in the Qala-e-Bakhtiar area on the southern outskirts of Kabul.
According to Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran, the attacker, who was wearing explosives, detonated the device in a public area. The explosion resulted in the death of one woman among the six fatalities reported. The injured were promptly taken to local hospitals for treatment.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, but several terror organizations remain active in Afghanistan. The last significant suicide attack occurred in Kandahar in March, with the regional branch of the Islamic State (ISIS) claiming responsibility. The Taliban government has downplayed the presence of such groups, asserting that they have been suppressed.
The Taliban, which took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces, has made security a top priority amid ongoing violence. Despite a reduction in attacks directly challenging Taliban rule, there are still sporadic incidents attributed to rival groups like ISIS.
The Taliban authorities have repeatedly emphasized their commitment to security, although analysts suggest they often downplay or delay confirming the details of such attacks. The Taliban’s security operations have seen some success, but challenges remain as they continue to grapple with internal and external threats.
The situation in Afghanistan remains volatile, with the Taliban’s reimposition of strict Sharia law contributing to a tense atmosphere. The recent attack underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by the country as it navigates its complex political and social landscape.
