In the past five years, a total of 633 Indian students have died abroad due to various causes, including natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions, according to data presented in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The highest number of fatalities was reported in Canada, with 172 cases, followed by the United States with 108, the United Kingdom with 58, and Australia with 57.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh provided the figures, highlighting that Canada had the highest incidence of student deaths abroad, including nine deaths due to attacks. The United States followed with six such cases. Other countries with notable figures include Russia with 37 deaths, Ukraine with 18, Germany with 24, and several others.
The Minister emphasized that the safety and security of Indian students abroad is a priority for the Indian government. Indian missions and posts overseas maintain regular contact with students to address their concerns and provide support.
In a separate update, Singh reported that 48 Indian students have been deported from the United States over the past three years. The specific reasons for these deportations are not officially disclosed by US authorities, but potential causes include unauthorized employment, withdrawal from classes, expulsion, and failure to comply with visa requirements related to optional practical training.
