A 64-year-old woman, identified as Arom, was rescued by police after enduring a terrifying two-hour struggle with a massive python that had coiled around her in her home outside Bangkok. The incident occurred on Tuesday as Arom was doing the dishes when she felt a sharp pain in her thigh, only to discover the 13 to 16-foot snake gripping her.
“I was about to scoop some water and when I sat down, it bit me immediately,” Arom recounted. “When I looked, I saw the snake wrapping around me.”
The python constricted around Arom’s torso, causing her to fall to the floor of her kitchen. Despite her desperate attempts to free herself by grabbing the snake’s head, she was unable to loosen its grip. “It only tightened,” she added, reflecting on the ordeal.
Arom cried out for help, but it took some time before a neighbor heard her distress calls and contacted the police. “We were shocked to see the lady was tied down on the floor with the python wrapping around her,” Police Major Sergeant Anusorn Wongmalee of the Phra Samut Chedi Police Station said. “The snake was really big.”
Upon their arrival, police and animal control officers used a crowbar to strike the snake on the head until it finally released Arom, allowing her to escape its clutches. Although she sustained several bites during the encounter, she received medical treatment afterward.
The python, however, managed to slither away before it could be captured. Authorities expressed concern over the snake’s escape, stating, “We couldn’t catch it.”
Pythons are non-venomous constrictors that kill their prey by squeezing them tightly. Thailand is home to around 250 snake species, including reticulated, Burmese, and Blood pythons. According to Thailand’s National Health Security Office, there were approximately 12,000 cases of snake and animal bites treated in the country last year, resulting in 26 fatalities from snake bites.
While deaths from large constrictors are rare, recent years have seen several alarming incidents, including a woman in Indonesia who was found dead inside a python after it swallowed her whole. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by wildlife in the region.
