A shocking discovery has sparked an investigation after a woman in China found a human tooth inside a meat-filled mooncake she bought from US supermarket giant Sam’s Club in Changzhou, Jiangsu province. The mooncake, priced at 30 yuan (approximately US$4), became the subject of public outrage after the woman shared her findings in a video on Douyin, China’s popular social media platform.
The woman, whose family members confirmed the tooth did not belong to them, reported the incident to local authorities. Sam’s Club employees in Changzhou stated that an internal investigation had been launched to determine the source of the contamination. The mooncake’s manufacturer has denied the possibility of contamination. A spokesperson for the company, surnamed Liu, told Hongxing News that their production process includes meat mincing and inspection via an X-ray system capable of detecting bone fragments. Liu emphasized that such incidents have not occurred in over a decade of operations. Security footage has been shared with Sam’s Club and the Changzhou market regulation department, both of which are now reviewing the case.
The local market regulation department has also confirmed an ongoing investigation.
This incident follows a similar case in India, where Mayadevi Gupta, a woman from Madhya Pradesh, found four dentures inside a chocolate she received at a child’s birthday party. Gupta, who ate the chocolate days later, recounted her shock after realizing the crunch in the chocolate was a set of false teeth. The India Today report highlighted the increasing consumer concerns about food safety worldwide.
