Search Resumes for Missing Briton in Dolomites After Sam Harris’ Body Found

    -

The search for the second missing British mountaineer in the Dolomites has resumed after bad weather temporarily halted rescue efforts. Sam Harris, 35, and Aziz Ziriat, 36, both from London, had been missing for more than a week, with no communication since January 1, and they failed to board their flight home on January 6. Their last known location was near the Casina Dosson mountain hut, close to Riva Del Garda on Lake Garda, Italy.

A body was discovered on Wednesday, believed to be that of Mr. Harris. Italian authorities confirmed the discovery after a canine unit located the body during their search. The Alpine Rescue Corps spokesperson reported that the body was found in the Passo di Conca area, buried under the snow. The search for Mr. Ziriat continues, as the rescue teams comb the rugged terrain of the Adamello group in Trentino, where the men were last seen.

According to the spokesperson, four canine units and 30 rescuers from the Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Trentino, along with personnel from the Guardia di Finanza and Fire Brigade, are involved in the operation. The search had been briefly halted due to adverse weather conditions but resumed this morning.

Following the discovery of Mr. Harris’ body, a statement was released by Palace for Life, the official charity of Crystal Palace FC, expressing deep condolences. “We are aware of reports that the body of Sam Harris has been recovered. We are devastated to receive this news and our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to his loved ones,” the statement read. However, there was no update on the whereabouts of Mr. Ziriat at the time.

The rescue operation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. The families of both men have been notified, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office is providing assistance.

Joe Stone, a university friend of Mr. Ziriat, expressed concern earlier, noting that the two men were experienced hikers who enjoyed venturing off the beaten path. He added that alarm bells were raised when they failed to check in for their return flight.

The tragic disappearance of Mr. Harris and Mr. Ziriat has sparked widespread concern, and the search for the second missing hiker continues in the hope of bringing closure to their families.
