Israeli Minister Ben Gvir Resigns Over Gaza Ceasefire Deal

    -

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has resigned from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government over the controversial ceasefire agreement with Hamas in Gaza. Ben Gvir, a hardline figure in Israeli politics, took this step in opposition to the deal, which he and his political allies in the Jewish Power party, Otzma Yehudit, deem a “capitulation to Hamas.”

In a statement, the party criticized the ceasefire deal for what it described as the “release of hundreds of murderers” and the “renunciation of the Israeli military’s achievements in the war” against Hamas. Despite Ben Gvir’s resignation and his party’s withdrawal from Netanyahu’s coalition, the move is not expected to bring down the government or impact the ongoing ceasefire efforts. However, his departure is seen as destabilizing for the coalition government.

Ben Gvir had previously warned that his party would leave the coalition if the ceasefire deal with Hamas was approved. While the minister’s resignation has raised tensions within the Israeli government, the Jewish Power party indicated it would not seek to bring down Netanyahu’s government but hinted that it could rejoin if the conflict resumes.

The ceasefire deal, which had already been delayed, is seen as a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The war, which began on October 7, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of over 46,000 people in Gaza and numerous Israeli soldiers.

In a parallel development, Hamas announced the names of three hostages it plans to release as part of the ceasefire agreement, potentially signaling a breakthrough in the tense negotiations.

While Israel’s government has not yet commented on the hostages’ list, the delay in the start of the ceasefire has raised concerns. This latest development comes amidst ongoing political tensions in Israel and the wider Middle East, as the Gaza conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on both sides.

The situation remains fluid, with continued efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire and the fate of the hostages hanging in the balance.
