A United Airlines flight experienced a terrifying emergency landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos after encountering a technical issue, leaving six people seriously injured.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to Washington Dulles International Airport, was carrying 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots when it had to return to Lagos. The incident occurred shortly after the flight had taken off, with the plane reportedly losing cabin pressure, resulting in a sharp and sudden descent. Passengers onboard described the terrifying moments before the emergency landing, which left them shaken.
“I hit my head on the ceiling because of the impact,” recounted one passenger, who said that the aircraft experienced three sharp descents before it was forced to return to the airport. “We had already been served our meals when the plane lost pressure and dropped. It was chaotic, and I was scared for my life.”
A video shared on Instagram depicted the aftermath inside the aircraft, showing scattered food, luggage, and personal items in the aisles, emphasizing the havoc caused by the sudden descent.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the details of the emergency in a statement, noting that although all passengers and crew members disembarked safely, six individuals sustained significant injuries. The statement reported that four passengers and two crew members were seriously injured, while an additional 27 passengers and five crew members suffered minor injuries.
Emergency services were swiftly mobilized, with the FAAN rescue team on the ground to provide immediate medical attention. Those with more serious injuries were transported to a nearby hospital, while others received care and support at the airport.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the technical issue that led to the loss of cabin pressure and the resulting sharp descent. While specific details have not yet been disclosed, United Airlines has confirmed that it is fully cooperating with local officials to determine the cause and to support those affected by the incident.
The plane, which had initially taken off from Lagos, was able to safely land at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, where emergency services were on hand to assist with the aftermath. United Airlines has assured passengers that it is committed to addressing the situation and supporting all those impacted by the incident.
This emergency landing serves as a reminder of the inherent risks in air travel and the importance of swift and effective responses in ensuring passenger safety during such emergencies.
The investigation into the cause of the technical issue is ongoing, with United Airlines cooperating fully with the local authorities.
