Meta to Offer Paid Ad-Free Subscription for Instagram and Facebook in Europe to Comply with Privacy Laws: Report

    -

Meta is reportedly planning to introduce a paid subscription model for users in Europe who wish to browse Instagram and Facebook without advertisements. The plan, called “SNA” (Subscription No Ads), may roll out in the coming months and is designed to comply with European Union (EU) privacy laws, including the Digital Markets Act.

    Pricing Structure

According to reports, Meta is considering the following charges:

    • €10 ($10.50) per month for ad-free Facebook or Instagram access on desktop.
    • €13 ($14) per month for ad-free Instagram on mobile.
    • €17 ($18) per month for an ad-free experience on both Instagram and Facebook via desktop.
    • €6 ($6.50) per month for each additional linked account.

The price increase for mobile users is attributed to Apple and Google’s commissions on in-app payments.

    Targeted at EU Users Only

This subscription model is specifically aimed at European users and is unlikely to be introduced in the United States anytime soon. Meta’s decision comes as a response to EU regulators’ strict data privacy rules, which require companies to provide users with an alternative to ad-supported services.

Currently, Meta has an estimated 258 million monthly Facebook users and 257 million Instagram users in the EU. Globally, the company has 3.88 billion monthly active users across its platforms as of June 30, 2023.

Meta’s advertising revenue in Europe is estimated to be around $17.88 per Facebook user per quarter, averaging just under $6 per user per month across all its apps.

This move highlights the growing impact of European digital privacy laws on major tech companies, forcing them to rethink their monetization strategies while maintaining compliance with stricter regulations.
