Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Strikes Indonesia’s Sulawesi Region, No Tsunami Threat Reported

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi region on Saturday, according to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The quake, which occurred at a depth of 109 kilometers (68 miles), did not trigger a tsunami warning, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) provided a slightly lower estimate of the quake, measuring it at magnitude 5.9. The tremor struck inland and at a considerable depth, which may have helped reduce its impact on the surface.

Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is highly prone to seismic activity, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The BMKG confirmed the quake on the X platform (formerly Twitter) and emphasized that there was no potential for a tsunami from this event.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, though no emergency alerts have been issued. Residents in the affected area are advised to remain cautious and follow any updates from local disaster management agencies.
