A large fire broke out on Friday in the Hourly Garage parking lot at Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), leading to an immediate closure of the airport. Videos circulating on social media showed thick, black smoke billowing from the parking structure, causing concern among travelers and local residents.
The airport authorities confirmed the fire incident via an official post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Due to a fire in the Hourly Garage, the airport is currently closed. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) is on-site working the issue. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has blocked inbound and outbound road access to the airport. Additional details will be forthcoming soon.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed, and emergency teams are actively working to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity.
Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office issued a traffic alert for motorists, announcing roadblocks on all inbound and outbound routes to the airport. Officers are assisting fire crews on-site and have urged the public to avoid the area until further notice.
“Officers are blocking inbound and outbound road access to the airport as crews work the fire. We will reopen roads when it is safe to do so. JAX Airport will release information on airport operations,” the alert read.
Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for updates on flights and to monitor official airport channels for real-time information on reopening and traffic conditions.
Further updates on the status of the fire, airport operations, and flight delays are expected as emergency responders continue their work.
