In a significant stride towards sustainable development, the state government of Maharashtra has sealed seven Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for green hydrogen projects, amounting to a staggering ₹2,76,300 crore. Concurrently, an additional MoU was inked with Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel for the establishment of a ₹40,000 crore steel plant. These initiatives aim to propel Maharashtra as a leader in green energy while fostering economic growth and generating employment opportunities.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded Maharashtra’s pivotal role in the green energy sector, emphasizing the state’s commitment to environmentally friendly initiatives. The seven green hydrogen projects outlined in the MoUs have a collective objective of generating 910 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA) of green energy, envisaging employment for approximately 63,900 individuals. The collaborative efforts involve prominent companies such as NTPC Green Energy Limited, JSW Energy Limited, AVAADA Green Hydrogen Private Limited, Bafna Solar and Infra Private Limited, ReNew eFuels Private Limited, Welspun Godavari GH2 Private Limited, INOX Air Products Private Limited, and L&T Green Energy Tech Limited.
Fadnavis praised the success of Maharashtra’s Green Hydrogen policy, which garnered positive responses from seven leading companies, signifying a collective commitment towards a greener future.
Additionally, the state government has partnered with Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel for a groundbreaking Green Steel Plant in Maharashtra. This ambitious venture represents an investment of ₹40,000 crore and is poised to create 20,000 job opportunities. Deputy CM Fadnavis conveyed this information via a tweet, highlighting the state’s dedication to fostering sustainable industries.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, while addressing the development, disclosed that discussions surrounding the Green Steel Plant took place during the recent Davos summit. Laxmi Mittal, the renowned industrialist, expressed his eagerness to forge additional partnerships with the state during his visit to Davos, setting the stage for further collaborations. The Green Steel Plant is expected to contribute an additional six million tonnes per annum to the industrial landscape.
Shinde, speaking at the function where the MoUs were signed, remarked, “This is an important project, joining the iron mines and MIDC had created a good atmosphere.” He highlighted that Maharashtra, having signed MoUs worth ₹3.53 lakh crore at the World Economic Forum in Davos, possesses the infrastructure to accommodate more investments, ensuring sustained economic growth.
The signing ceremony, held at the Sahyadri guesthouse, reflects Maharashtra’s resolute commitment to fostering green innovation, economic prosperity, and job creation on a monumental scale.
