Ukraine issued a stark warning of potential power outages across the nation following a relentless assault on its energy infrastructure by Russian missiles and drones. The attack, described as “massive” by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, coincided with the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II.
The onslaught targeted several regions in Ukraine, causing significant damage to at least three thermal power plants, according to reports from the country’s largest private energy operator DTEK. This latest strike is part of a series of attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities, with DTEK noting that it was the fifth such attack in just over a month.
In response to the Ukrainian government’s accusations of Russian aggression, Moscow’s defense ministry defended its actions as retaliation for attempts to sabotage Russian energy facilities. The Russian armed forces launched a coordinated strike against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and military-industrial complexes, escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.
The intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector have raised concerns about potential blackouts and electricity rationing across the country. Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s power operator, warned of possible power cuts for both household and industrial consumers due to the damage caused by Russian strikes.
Amid the escalating conflict, Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmygal announced the formation of a new government task force to address the consequences of what he termed “Russian energy terror.” The task force will focus on preparing Ukrainian homes and businesses for potential disruptions in the coming months.
On the battlefield, Russia claimed advances by capturing two frontline villages, including areas in the Kharkiv region previously held by Ukraine. These advances mark significant territorial gains for Russian forces as they continue their offensive.
The conflict has also seen a surge in aerial attacks, with Russia launching missiles and drones overnight. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a significant portion of these attacks, but the continued assault has put cities like Kyiv on high alert.
As tensions escalate, Ukraine has appealed to its allies for more military support, particularly in terms of air defenses. The conflict shows no signs of abating, with both sides engaged in a fierce struggle for strategic advantages on the ground and in the air.
