Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima, 51, was tragically killed in a plane crash along with nine others, including former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri. The aircraft, a Malawi Army Air Wing Dornier 228-202K, disappeared on Monday amidst bad weather while attempting to land in Mzuzu and was later found destroyed in a foggy forest.
President Lazarus Chakwera confirmed the devastating news, expressing deep sorrow over the “terrible tragedy.” The search and rescue team located the wreckage, confirming no survivors.
The group was en route to attend a funeral in Mzuzu when the accident occurred. Despite the aircraft’s previous successful operations and experienced crew, it crashed on its return to Lilongwe.
Chilima, known for his charisma and dedication, had recently been cleared of corruption charges and resumed his official duties as vice president. President Chakwera praised him as a “good man, devoted father, and patriotic citizen.”
The nation mourns the loss of Chilima, a respected leader and beloved figure, as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
