
A stabbing attack near the central Dam Square in Amsterdam on Thursday left five people injured, Dutch police confirmed. Authorities have arrested a suspect and are investigating the motive behind the attack.
Police cordoned off the area where the incident occurred and have urged the public to come forward with any footage or information that could assist in the investigation. “We currently have no information about the cause or motive of the stabbing incident. This is part of our investigation,” the police said in a statement.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with ambulances and police vans arriving at the scene. A trauma helicopter also landed on Dam Square to provide medical assistance to the victims. Early images from local news agency ANP showed at least one injured person being transported on a stretcher into an ambulance. However, the condition of the victims remains unknown.
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema reportedly left a meeting at the town hall upon receiving news of the attack.
Authorities are urging witnesses or those with footage of the incident to upload it as evidence to assist in the ongoing investigation.
