China’s Ministry of State Security issued a cautionary alert to students on Wednesday, advising them to be vigilant against potential espionage attempts from foreign intelligence agencies. The agency’s warning, communicated through its WeChat account, highlights the risk of being targeted by individuals posing as attractive figures to lure students into compromising national security.
According to the ministry, foreign espionage operatives are actively targeting college students with access to sensitive and classified scientific research data. These individuals often present themselves as university scholars, research institution employees, or consultants, seeking to exploit students’ curiosity and eagerness for new experiences.
The ministry’s statement outlined several tactics used by foreign agents. They may offer lucrative part-time opportunities under the guise of market research or academic exchanges. Once students show interest, these operatives provide what appears to be free training and guidance through social media, phone calls, or video chats.
In a more personal approach, the agents may disguise themselves as attractive individuals—“handsome men and beautiful women”—using false romantic gestures to create an emotional connection and lure students into espionage activities.
The warning is part of China’s broader effort to address perceived threats to its national security. This year, the country has intensified its crackdown on spying activities, frequently releasing alerts and publicizing cases of espionage to bolster vigilance among its citizens.
