In a distressing incident in Shenzhen, China, a man has been forced to undergo the removal of his left eyeball after developing a severe infection from killing a fly that landed on his face. The man, identified only by his surname Wu, initially sought to swat away the insect, but the action led to unexpected and grave consequences.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Wu, a resident of Shenzhen in Guangdong province, noticed significant pain and swelling in his left eye shortly after the fly landed on him. The symptoms quickly escalated, with the eye becoming red, swollen, and extremely painful. Despite seeking medical treatment and taking prescribed medication, Wu’s condition worsened, and his vision deteriorated rapidly.
Doctors diagnosed Wu with seasonal conjunctivitis, but the infection soon advanced beyond the eye, leading to severe ulceration. The infection’s rapid progression posed a serious threat of spreading to his brain, compelling medical professionals to make the difficult decision to remove his left eyeball to prevent further complications.
The offending insect was identified as a drain fly, a small pest often found in damp, dark areas such as bathrooms, sinks, and kitchens. These flies are known for their larvae, which typically live in stagnant water. Experts recommend remaining calm when an insect approaches the eye and avoiding aggressive swatting. Instead, it is advised to gently shoo the insect away and cleanse the area with clean water or a saline solution to minimize the risk of infection.
Wu’s case has sparked considerable attention on Chinese social media platform Weibo, with many users expressing shock and concern. One user commented, “This is terrifying. I often see these small insects in my bathroom and will no longer kill them randomly.” Another user emphasized the importance of cleanliness, stating, “Always keeping the bathroom and kitchen clean is the best way to protect ourselves.”
