Chinese Premier Li Qiang inaugurated Gwadar Airport during his visit to Pakistan, emphasizing continued cooperation between China and Pakistan in infrastructure development. The airport, funded by Beijing, is situated in Balochistan, a region notorious for militancy, where Chinese investments have faced threats from separatist groups.
Although Li did not visit Balochistan, he participated in a virtual inauguration ceremony held in Islamabad, approximately 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles) away. “China will continue to work with Pakistan to uphold the principle of planning together, building together, and benefitting together,” he stated alongside Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
An aviation official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that while the airport’s facilities are ready for operations, it is not yet open for flights. This development is part of the broader China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a multi-billion-dollar initiative linking China’s Xinjiang region to Pakistan’s coastal areas, with Gwadar Port at its core.
Li’s visit marks a significant diplomatic effort, as he aims to strengthen ties during a four-day stay that includes participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit hosted by Islamabad. Despite the partnership, China-Pakistan relations have faced strains due to militant attacks targeting CPEC projects, resulting in over 20 Chinese fatalities in recent years. Just earlier this month, two Chinese engineers were killed in Karachi during an attack claimed by Baloch militants, who allege that Pakistan is exploiting the region’s resources for external interests.
In response to security concerns, Prime Minister Sharif reassured Li of Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing peace and security for Chinese nationals in the country. “I want to assure you that I will work with you very closely to promote peace and security for the people of China in Pakistan,” he declared.
As both nations look to strengthen their strategic partnership, the successful operation of Gwadar Airport will be a crucial step in fostering economic growth and stability in a region facing ongoing challenges.
