On Thursday afternoon, Delhi and its neighboring areas, collectively known as the National Capital Region (NCR), experienced tremors from an earthquake, with the epicenter located in Afghanistan. The quake, measuring a magnitude of 6.1, struck at 2:50 pm, causing panic among residents in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS), the Indian government’s nodal agency for earthquake monitoring, confirmed the earthquake’s details on X, stating, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
Reports indicated that the tremors were felt not only in the NCR but also in Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, and various parts of northern India. Pakistani cities, including Lahore, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, also experienced the quake.
As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage. The NCS specified that the quake’s epicenter was situated 241 kilometers north-northeast of Kabul, Afghanistan.
The earthquake led to a moment of panic, prompting people in Delhi and the NCR to evacuate buildings. Furniture shaking was reported by several residents, adding to the sense of urgency.
Simultaneously, the Pakistan Meteorological Department reported a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in parts of Pakistan at 2:20 pm. The Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan was identified as the epicenter. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake registered a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale, with a depth of 206.6 km, occurring 44 km SSW of Jurm in Afghanistan.
While the tremors caused alarm, authorities are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the importance of earthquake preparedness and urging residents to stay vigilant during such events.
