In a recent escalation of the ongoing conflict, an Israeli airstrike on Sunday targeted the Safad school in Gaza City, resulting in the deaths of at least eleven individuals, including a woman and a young girl. The school was being used as a shelter for displaced Palestinians.
Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for the Gaza civil defense agency, reported that several others were wounded in the strike. The Israeli military, however, maintained that their attack was aimed at a Hamas command center located within the school.
According to Gaza health officials, the school also housed a Hamas police outpost, which may have been the intended target of the Israeli airstrike. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) defended its action, stating that it struck a command and control center used by Hamas militants embedded in the building.
The recent airstrike occurred amid a backdrop of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas, which reignited on October 7. The initial Hamas attack on Israel led to the deaths of 1,205 people, predominantly civilians, as reported by AFP based on official Israeli figures. Since then, the Israeli military has conducted extensive bombing campaigns across the Gaza Strip, resulting in a reported 40,738 fatalities, according to the Gaza health ministry.
