The company’s mission to “understand reality” was revealed through Musk’s tweet, lacking further details or explanation. However, the newly unveiled website (https://x.ai/) sheds light on xAI’s ambitions and the exceptional team supporting this endeavor.
Led by Elon Musk himself, xAI comprises a group of talented individuals who have previously contributed to renowned AI organizations such as OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and DeepMind (recently integrated into Google). With a vision to understand the true essence of the universe, xAI aspires to explore the fundamental nature of our reality.
The team members listed on the website include Igor Babuschkin, Manuel Kroiss, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, Christian Szegedy, Jimmy Ba, Toby Pohlen, Ross Nordeen, Kyle Kosic, Greg Yang, Guodong Zhang, and Zihang Dai. They are complemented by the guidance of Dan Hendrycks, a prominent researcher leading the Center for AI Safety, a nonprofit organization dedicated to mitigating risks associated with AI on a societal scale.

xAI emphasizes its separate entity from Musk’s overarching X Corp but underlines its intention to collaborate closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies. The existence of xAI first came to light in April when filings indicated Musk’s involvement in founding the company in Nevada.
