Farmers in Punjab Stage Major Protest Amidst Air Quality Concerns

Farmers in Punjab have organized a significant one-day protest today, October 26, 2024, in response to multiple grievances, including delays in paddy procurement and penalties related to stubble burning. The protest, led by the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari), will involve a “chakka jam” at four key locations: Sangrur, Moga, Phagwara, and Batala, beginning at 1 PM.

Surjeet Singh Phul, chairman of the union, stated that the roadblocks are intended to highlight the lack of timely procurement of paddy, which has been a pressing issue this harvesting season. As of now, only 10% of the 11.10 lakh tonnes of paddy brought to Punjab’s grain markets since the procurement season commenced on October 1 has been lifted by the procurement agencies. This slow progress has prompted Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to call on the central government for assistance.

The protest also aims to address the penalties imposed on farmers for stubble burning, an issue that has become increasingly contentious. Rakesh Tikait, a spokesperson for the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), criticized the government for its approach, demanding clarity on what alternatives farmers have for managing stubble. Tikait emphasized that the government must provide farmers with viable solutions rather than punitive measures.

The Punjab government has faced mounting pressure from farmers to find a permanent resolution to the stubble burning issue, which they argue is often a necessity due to the current agricultural practices and equipment limitations.

Today’s protest reflects the ongoing tension between farmers and the government regarding agricultural policies and environmental regulations, as air quality concerns in the region remain critical. Farmers have warned that they will escalate their protests if their demands are not addressed satisfactorily.
