Food Safety Violations Uncovered at Sweet Shops in Hyderabad’s Ameerpet Ahead of Diwali 2024

As Diwali 2024 approaches, food safety officials have intensified inspections across Hyderabad, particularly in the Ameerpet area, where several sweet shops have been found violating crucial hygiene and safety standards. The inspections, conducted by the Telangana Food Safety Department on October 23, 2024, revealed alarming conditions in multiple establishments.

One of the most concerning findings was at Delhi Mithaiwala, where inspectors discovered rat feces in the store room, indicating a possible rodent infestation. The inspection also highlighted the presence of open dustbins in the kitchen, unlabelled food items such as milk and curd, and inadequate insect-proofing, with doors and windows poorly fitted. Additionally, sugar bags were improperly stored directly on the floor, with no gap maintained between the bags and the walls. The establishment also lacked a FoSTaC-trained supervisor, medical fitness certificates, and essential water analysis reports.

At Agra Sweets, officials found the shop operating with mere registration instead of the required state license. The establishment had failed to display a copy of its FSSAI registration on the premises, and similar violations were noted, including open dustbins and food handlers working without proper head caps, gloves, and aprons. Uncovered and unlabelled food items were discovered in the refrigerator, alongside unlabelled ready-to-eat savory snacks, which were subsequently discarded. Additionally, expired items, including six packets of chivda and seven packets of bhel, were removed from the shelves.

The task force also inspected Vinuthna Foods, where the findings were equally troubling. The shop was operating with an expired registration certificate and lacked pest control records and proper documentation regarding food procurement. Inspectors noted that food handlers were not adhering to hygiene protocols, as many were not wearing caps or aprons, and several food items were left unlabelled.

Similar issues were observed at Vasi Reddy Home Foods, where the business was operating without a state license and failed to display its FSSAI registration. The food handlers were again found without proper protective gear, and the establishment lacked necessary records, including pest control documentation and medical fitness certificates.

The task force’s findings raise significant concerns about food safety practices as the festive season approaches, emphasizing the importance of compliance with hygiene regulations to ensure public health. Authorities are expected to take strict action against the violators to safeguard consumers and maintain food safety standards in the region.
