Heavy Rains Trigger Flash Floods and Landslides Across Arunachal Pradesh

Flash Floods and Landslides Batter Arunachal Pradesh Amid Heavy Rains; Red Alert Issued

Torrential rainfall over the past few days has triggered widespread flash floods and landslides across multiple districts of Arunachal Pradesh, severely disrupting daily life and infrastructure, officials confirmed on Saturday.

In Upper Subansiri district, the overflowing Sigin River inundated low-lying areas of Daporijo, the district headquarters. Flash floods caused extensive damage to property, with at least 117 houses and key public infrastructure affected in Polo Colony, Sigum Rijo, Sigin Colony, Bukpen Colony, and Forest Colony. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.

District officials, including Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo and Additional DC Biaro Sorum, visited the affected sites to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts. A prohibitory order has been issued urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and shift to safer locations.

“All departments, including police and disaster response teams, have been placed on high alert,” said District Information and Public Relations Officer Taw Ekke. Relief operations are underway, and assessments are being conducted to provide immediate support to impacted families.

In West Kameng district, hundreds of people were stranded near 35 Charai at Jamiri on the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang road, where landslides have blocked traffic. Additional road blockages were reported in Jyoti Nagar, Dirang, Padma, and Durga Mandir areas.

A major landslide in Petaling Colony, Bomdila, washed away roads, culverts, and an abandoned house, though no casualties occurred. Landslides disrupted power supply and road connectivity between Nafra-Nakhu-Nachibom villages and Bichom district, leaving commuters stranded.

Border Roads Organisation (BRO) teams and equipment have been deployed to clear blockages, but ongoing rain has hampered progress. District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) Mindu Yangzom has urged residents to avoid unstable areas and water bodies and evacuate immediately in case of emergencies.

In addition, landslides have been reported in Kurung Kumey, Kamle, and Lower Subansiri districts, prompting authorities to suspend construction and earth-cutting activities. Night travel has been discouraged unless necessary.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall in the coming days due to a depression over Bangladesh, with a red alert issued for five districts: Lower Subansiri, West Kameng, West Siang, Lohit, and Changlang. These areas may witness extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning, increasing the risk of more floods and landslides.

Residents, especially in low-lying and disaster-prone areas, have been advised to stay vigilant and follow safety advisories. Emergency services remain on standby as monitoring continues across the region.
