Hemant Soren, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), has officially staked his claim to form the next government in the state following his party’s victory in the recent state assembly elections. On Sunday, Soren met with Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, where he presented the support letters from his alliance partners and was invited to form the new government. The swearing-in ceremony for Soren is scheduled for November 28.
The JMM-led alliance emerged victorious in the Jharkhand elections, securing 56 seats in the 81-member state assembly. This victory marked the party’s second consecutive term in power, despite a fierce campaign from the BJP-led NDA, which managed to win only 24 seats.
Unanimous Support from INDIA Bloc Leaders
After the victory, Hemant Soren was unanimously elected as the leader of the legislature party by the leaders of the INDIA bloc in Jharkhand. Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay confirmed that Soren had received widespread support from party workers and leaders. “Hemant Soren was chosen as the leader of the Jharkhand Assembly House, and the tentative date for the oath-taking is the 28th,” Sahay told ANI.
Before staking his claim, Soren resigned from his position as chief minister, which is a formal requirement before the formation of a new government. The meeting with the governor solidified the alliance’s intent to take over the reins of the state once again.
Hemant Soren’s Electoral Victory
Soren, who contested from Barhait, successfully retained his seat, defeating BJP candidate Gamliyel Hembrom by a substantial margin of 39,791 votes. Soren garnered 95,612 votes, while Hembrom secured only 55,821 votes. This victory underscored the continued popularity of Soren and the JMM, particularly in the tribal-dominated regions of the state.
Election Results and Alliance Composition
The JMM-led alliance secured a clear majority with 56 seats, surpassing the required 41-seat threshold for a majority. Of these, JMM won 34 seats, while its allies, including Congress (16 seats), RJD (4 seats), and CPI-ML (2 seats), contributed a significant portion of the total. On the other hand, the BJP-led NDA, despite its aggressive campaign, could only manage 24 seats, with the BJP winning 21, and its allies – AJSU Party, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and JD (U) – claiming one seat each.
The Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha, a smaller party in the state elections, secured one seat, with its leader Jairam Kumar Mahato winning the Dumri constituency.
A New Chapter for Jharkhand
Hemant Soren, who will be sworn in as the 14th chief minister of Jharkhand, is set to continue his leadership in a state that was formed in 2000. The JMM’s victory, despite the challenges posed by the BJP, signifies the party’s continued dominance in Jharkhand’s political landscape.
The formation of a new government under Hemant Soren’s leadership is expected to bring stability and continued focus on the development and welfare of the state’s indigenous communities. As the JMM-led government prepares to take office, all eyes will be on the upcoming oath-taking ceremony on November 28.
