India expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the people of South Korea following a tragic plane crash in Muan that claimed the lives of at least 176 passengers. The crash, which occurred on Sunday, involved a Jeju Airlines Boeing 737-800, a 15-year-old aircraft returning from Bangkok.
India’s Ambassador to Seoul, Amit Kumar, conveyed the country’s condolences through a message on X, stating, “Deeply saddened to learn of the tragic plane crash at Muan airport today. We extend our heartfelt condolences to bereaved family members. The Indian Embassy stands in solidarity with the people & government of RoK in this difficult hour.”
The crash took place when the plane, carrying 181 passengers, lost control during its landing at Muan airport. Reports suggest that the landing gear failed to deploy, causing the aircraft to skid off the runway. As it collided with a concrete fence, a devastating explosion occurred, engulfing the plane in flames. South Korea’s fire department confirmed that 176 people, including 83 women, 82 men, and others whose identities were not immediately disclosed, lost their lives in the accident.
The incident unfolded amidst a politically tense period in South Korea, following the impeachment of President Yoon, whose imposition of martial law had sparked widespread unrest. Acting President Choi Sang-mok convened an emergency meeting to coordinate rescue operations, pledging that the government would dedicate all resources to managing the aftermath of the crash and offering support to the grieving families. “No words of consolation would suffice for the bereaved families who have suffered this tragedy,” Choi remarked.
In response, the ruling People Power Party formed a task force to investigate the cause of the crash and assist the families of the victims. Party leader Kweon Seong-dong confirmed that members would visit the crash site on Monday to assess response measures and prevention strategies.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party departed for Muan to support the rescue efforts, announcing that his party had set up an emergency response committee led by Joo Cheol-hyeon, head of the South Jeolla unit.
As investigations into the crash continue, the tragedy has cast a shadow over South Korea, with both the government and opposition leaders working together to provide support to the affected families. The loss of life in this devastating crash has deeply touched people worldwide, as nations extend their condolences and stand in solidarity with South Korea during this heartbreaking time.
