A series of Israeli air strikes hit multiple locations in central Syria late Sunday, causing significant damage and casualties. According to state media and reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strikes resulted in at least four deaths and 13 injuries, with local media indicating that fires broke out as a result.
Syria’s state news agency SANA reported that the air defenses engaged in a confrontation with the strikes, which targeted several sites in the central region, including a highway in Hama province. Firefighting teams worked through the night to control the fires sparked by the attacks. The Masyaf National Hospital, located in western Hama province, reported receiving the casualties, though their exact affiliations—whether civilians or militants—remain unclear.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based monitoring group, identified one of the targeted sites as a scientific research center in Maysaf. This facility, along with other locations struck, reportedly houses Iranian militias and experts involved in weapon development. Additional strikes were reported around the coastal city of Tartous.
The Israeli military has yet to comment on the strikes. Israel has conducted numerous operations in Syria in recent years, primarily targeting Syrian forces and Iranian-backed groups. These operations are part of Israel’s broader strategy to prevent Iranian military entrenchment in Syria, as the country serves as a key conduit for Iranian arms shipments to Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group.
