Tensions in the Middle East have surged following recent high-profile assassinations of key leaders from Hamas and Hezbollah, leading to heightened warnings for Indian nationals in the region.
The escalation began with Israel’s targeted killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. This action was reportedly in response to rocket attacks on the Golan Heights. In rapid succession, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran, while Hezbollah’s Fouad Shukur also fell victim to strikes in Lebanon last month.
These developments come amid ongoing regional conflict, particularly involving Iran-backed factions across Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen. The heightened tensions have prompted a cautious stance from several nations, including India.
In response to the escalating situation, the Indian Embassy in Beirut has advised its citizens against traveling to Lebanon and has urged those currently in the country to leave. Indian nationals in Israel are also being advised to exercise increased vigilance and adhere to safety protocols.
Air India has suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv until August 8, reflecting the broader concerns about travel safety in the region.
US President Joe Biden has expressed significant concern over the rising tensions, noting that recent actions have exacerbated the situation. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Iranian officials, along with representatives from allied groups, are deliberating their next moves, potentially involving coordinated or staggered responses.
Israel has warned that any aggression will be met with severe consequences, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasizing the country’s preparedness for any scenario.
