A small plane crashed into a residential neighborhood in San Diego on Thursday, setting off a massive blaze that engulfed around 15 homes, according to authorities. The crash occurred in the Murphy Canyon area near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
San Diego Police have evacuated multiple streets and issued public warnings urging residents to avoid the area. They have also requested the public to report any sightings of debris or the smell of jet fuel. “We have jet fuel all over the place,” said Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy during a press briefing. “Our main goal is to search all these homes and get everybody out right now.”
Eddy confirmed that the aircraft struck multiple homes directly, resulting in a significant fire. Television footage from the scene showed rows of burned-out vehicles and at least one severely damaged home.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the crashed aircraft as a Cessna 550 and confirmed it went down near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport. “The number of people on board is unknown at this time,” the FAA stated.
Firefighters and emergency personnel are continuing search and rescue operations in the affected area. No casualties have been confirmed yet, and authorities are expected to provide further updates as the situation develops.
