Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Kyiv in August, marking the first trip to Ukraine by an Indian leader since Russia’s invasion in 2022, according to sources. This visit comes just a month after PM Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy, where the two leaders shared a warm embrace.
The forthcoming visit highlights India’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. The meeting at the G7 Summit was significant, as it underscored the growing diplomatic relations between India and Ukraine despite the tumultuous situation.
President Zelensky extended a formal invitation to PM Modi following his re-election and third term as Prime Minister. During a phone call in March 2024, PM Modi and President Zelensky discussed ways to enhance the India-Ukraine partnership and reaffirmed India’s support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Modi emphasized India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy as the path forward.
In line with India’s diplomatic stance, PM Modi had previously visited Moscow earlier this month, where he met with President Vladimir Putin. During this visit, Modi reiterated India’s position that no solution to the conflict could be achieved through warfare. He stressed the importance of respecting the United Nations Charter, including territorial integrity and sovereignty, and called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis.
India has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, with PM Modi expressing that India is prepared to contribute to any peace efforts.
