Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russia from October 22-23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This marks PM Modi’s second visit to Russia in 2024, after previously attending the India-Russia Annual Summit in July.
The BRICS Summit, chaired by Russia, will focus on the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” providing an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues. PM Modi is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with fellow BRICS leaders and invited dignitaries during the event.
BRICS, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, represents major emerging economies, accounting for 41% of the world’s population, 24% of global GDP, and over 16% of world trade. The group has become an important forum for discussing economic cooperation and global governance.
The MEA noted that the summit will allow leaders to assess the progress of initiatives launched by BRICS and explore future areas of collaboration.
Russian President Putin extended a personal invitation to PM Modi earlier in September during a meeting with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting. Putin referred to Modi as a “good friend” and expressed eagerness to hold a bilateral meeting with the Indian leader on October 22 in Kazan.
In addition to attending the BRICS summit, PM Modi is expected to revisit previous agreements made during his July visit to Russia, which focused on strengthening India-Russia ties in various sectors. During that trip, PM Modi was honored with Russia’s highest civilian award, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, and he visited the Rosatom Pavilion at the VDNKh Exhibition Centre with President Putin.
