A tragic incident unfolded near the site of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee yesterday, resulting in the fatal shooting of 43-year-old Samuel Sharpe, a homeless Black man. According to reports, Sharpe, armed with knives, was shot by police officers from Columbus, Ohio, prompting outcry and questions about police response tactics.
Milwaukee police chief Jeffrey Norman addressed the media, stating that the shooting occurred when Sharpe, wielding a knife in each hand, allegedly charged towards an unarmed individual. Officers from Columbus, part of a multi-jurisdictional security detail for the convention, intervened upon observing the confrontation at King Park, over a kilometer away from the convention venue.
“This was a situation where someone’s life was in danger,” Chief Norman stated during a press briefing. “The officers acted to protect public safety based on the imminent threat perceived.”
However, the incident has sparked anger among local residents, who questioned the presence of out-of-state officers patrolling their neighborhood. Many gathered at the scene to protest, criticizing the use of lethal force and calling for accountability in policing practices.
“They came into our community and shot down our family right here at a public park,” said Linda Sharpe, cousin of the deceased. “What are you doing in our city, shooting people down?”
Samuel Sharpe was a longtime resident of a tent encampment near King Park, known for its homeless population and social service clinics. Local residents expressed frustration, suggesting that Milwaukee police officers, more familiar with the community, might have handled the situation differently to avoid a deadly outcome.
Norman explained that the Columbus officers, on bicycle patrol in their designated area, encountered the altercation involving Sharpe and repeatedly instructed him to drop his weapons. When Sharpe allegedly advanced towards the unarmed individual, the officers discharged their firearms in response.
The shooting comes amidst heightened security measures for the Republican National Convention, which commenced earlier this week and is set to conclude on Thursday. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident while community leaders and activists plan a nighttime vigil to honor Samuel Sharpe’s memory.
