President Droupadi Murmu will embark on a four-day state visit to Portugal and Slovakia from April 7 to 10, aiming to enhance diplomatic and economic ties with the two nations, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Wednesday.
Visit to Portugal
Murmu will visit Portugal from April 7-8 at the invitation of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. This marks a historic visit, as it is the first by an Indian President to Portugal in 27 years. The last such visit was in 1998 when former President K. R. Narayanan traveled to the country.
During her stay, President Murmu will hold delegation-level talks with her Portuguese counterpart and meet Prime Minister Luis Montenegro as well as National Assembly President Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco. The discussions will focus on strengthening India-Portugal relations, which have evolved into a multifaceted partnership over the years.
“India and Portugal share historic and friendly bilateral ties, which have grown significantly in various sectors. The visit will provide fresh momentum to our growing cooperation,” the MEA stated.
Visit to Slovakia
On April 9-10, President Murmu will visit Slovakia at the invitation of President Peter Pellegrini. This will be the first visit by an Indian President to Slovakia in 29 years.
During her visit, Murmu will hold bilateral discussions with President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. She will also meet Richard Rasi, the Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic.
“The visit highlights the importance India places on its ties with Slovakia. It will offer an opportunity to further deepen and expand our bilateral engagement,” the MEA said.
At both destinations, President Murmu will interact with members of the Indian diaspora, reinforcing India’s global outreach. The visit is expected to boost economic collaboration, cultural exchanges, and diplomatic relations between India and the two European nations.
