In a display of camaraderie and diplomatic engagement, Russian President Vladimir Putin waved goodbye to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un through the window of his private jet, marking the end of a memorable visit. The video of the farewell has gone viral on social media, capturing the warmth between the two leaders.
Putin arrived at Pyongyang’s airport early Wednesday, embarking on his first visit to North Korea in 24 years. The two leaders spent over 10 hours together, engaging in various activities that highlighted their mutual respect and friendship. According to TASS News Agency, they were seen feeding carrots to a horse and taking turns driving each other around in a Russian-built Aurus limousine.
The visit included significant diplomatic discussions and symbolic gestures. Putin and Kim held extensive talks, including one-on-one discussions and a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial for Red Army soldiers who died liberating Korea in World War Two. The visit underscored the deepening ties between the two nations.
In a touching moment aired on state-controlled Korean Central Television on Thursday, Kim gifted Putin a pair of Pungsan dogs, a local breed. The leaders were seen admiring the dogs, tied to a rose-covered fence. This gesture was reciprocated by Putin, who had previously gifted Kim an Aurus limousine in February and presented him with another during this visit. Kim, known for his interest in automobiles, now has at least two of these Russian-built vehicles.
Kim Jong Un described Putin as “the dearest friend of Korean people,” while Putin expressed gratitude for North Korea’s “balanced stance” on the situation in Ukraine, as reported by The Independent. The leaders also signed an agreement to deepen military cooperation, including a mutual defense pledge, with Kim referring to the new ties as an “alliance.”
The emotional farewell, captured in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), shows Putin peeping through the airplane window and waving at Kim Jong Un. An X user captioned the clip, “Putin and Kim Jong Un emotional goodbye,” reflecting the sentiment shared by many who viewed the video.
