Rescuers in Myanmar are facing immense challenges as they search for survivors following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Friday, killing more than 1,644 people. The disaster has also left 3,400 injured and 300 missing, with the death toll expected to rise further.
Rescue Efforts Amid Chaos
On Sunday, emergency workers, including teams from Myanmar and China, scoured the ruins of collapsed buildings in Mandalay, one of the worst-hit areas. However, their efforts were repeatedly halted by strong aftershocks, including a 6.7 magnitude tremor that followed the main quake.
The destruction has been widespread, with bridges collapsing, roads buckling, and mosques caving in during Friday prayers. At a Buddhist examination hall, rescuers worked tirelessly to locate buried victims. San Nwe Aye, the sister of a missing 46-year-old monk, anxiously awaited news, saying, “I want to hear the sound of him preaching again.”
Rebel Attacks and Communication Breakdowns Delay Aid
Myanmar’s ongoing conflict between military forces and rebel groups has further complicated rescue operations. While the National Unity Government (NUG), an anti-junta group, announced a two-week partial ceasefire, violence has continued. On Sunday, a rebel group reported that seven of its fighters were killed in an airstrike, just after the tremors.
Communication lines remain down, making coordination difficult. The United Nations (UN) has warned that the lack of immediate aid is impeding rescue efforts. In one tragic case, rescuers discovered a pregnant woman trapped for 55 hours under rubble, but by the time they reached her, she had died.
International Aid Efforts Underway
Global organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), have issued urgent appeals for humanitarian assistance.
- China has dispatched 118 search and rescue personnel, along with canine units, demolition equipment, and field hospitals.
- India has sent five aircraft loaded with medical aid and relief teams.
With time running out for survivors trapped under debris, rescue teams are racing against the clock to provide critical assistance despite the mounting challenges.
