The Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in Ukraine reported an attempted drone strike by Ukrainian forces, raising tensions in the conflict-stricken region.
According to the plant’s statement on Monday, a Ukrainian drone, described as a “kamikaze drone,” was shot down over the facility and landed on the roof of Reactor No. 6. Fortunately, the reactor is currently shut down, mitigating immediate risks.
The incident comes amidst escalating hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, with Russia alleging that Ukraine targeted the Zaporizhzhia plant three times on Sunday. Russia has demanded a response from Western powers regarding these alleged attacks. However, Kyiv has denied any involvement in the strikes, emphasizing that it had no role in the incidents at the nuclear facility.
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, which came under Russian control in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has been a focal point of tensions between the two countries. Both Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused each other of jeopardizing nuclear safety by targeting the plant, raising concerns about the potential for a catastrophic nuclear accident in the region.
