Russia Declares 3-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine for Victory Day Commemoration from May 8-10

    -

Russia Announces Three-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8-10 to Mark Victory Day

In a surprise move, Russia has announced a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine, set to coincide with Moscow’s World War II Victory Day commemorations from May 8-10. The Russian government declared the suspension of combat operations from midnight on May 7-8 until midnight on May 10-11, marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

The Kremlin issued a statement outlining the ceasefire, declaring, “Russia is declaring a ceasefire during the 80th anniversary of Victory Day. All combat operations will be suspended during this period.” Russia also emphasized that it expects Ukraine to adhere to the truce, warning that any violations by the Ukrainian side would be met with an “adequate and effective response” by Russian forces.

The ceasefire announcement comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares to lead the traditional military parade on Moscow’s Red Square on May 9, commemorating the historic victory. This truce follows a similar one ordered earlier during the Easter weekend, which lasted for 30 hours. However, both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of violations during that temporary pause in hostilities.

Putin’s order for a complete cessation of hostilities is framed as a humanitarian gesture to honor the significance of Victory Day. The Kremlin noted that the truce would start at midnight on May 8 (2100 GMT on May 7) and extend until May 10, allowing a break from the ongoing conflict.

This ceasefire announcement also comes amid increased diplomatic efforts from the United States to broker a lasting peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv. US President Joe Biden’s administration has been working with both sides in an attempt to facilitate negotiations, although so far, no significant concessions have been achieved.

Previously, Russia had been reluctant to engage in a complete unconditional ceasefire, tying such an agreement to specific conditions such as halting Western arms supplies to Ukraine and ending Ukraine’s mobilization efforts. The recent announcement of the May 8-10 ceasefire represents a shift in Russia’s approach, at least for the duration of the Victory Day observances.

The timing of the ceasefire has also drawn attention, as it coincides with the global focus on Russia’s actions in Ukraine, especially amid ongoing military actions and widespread international calls for peace and de-escalation. The offer of a temporary truce, however, has yet to be met with a clear response from Ukraine, which has long expressed skepticism regarding the sincerity of Russia’s ceasefire proposals.

The Kremlin’s statement indicates that it hopes the ceasefire will allow for a moment of reflection and respect for the historical significance of the World War II victory, but it remains to be seen whether both sides can uphold the truce, given the ongoing tensions and hostilities.
