In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia launched one of the most intense drone attacks on Ukraine since the beginning of its full-scale invasion in 2022. The assault, which occurred overnight into Sunday, saw a staggering 273 drones and decoys unleashed across Ukrainian airspace, Ukraine’s air force reported.
Of the total drones fired, 88 were intercepted by Ukrainian defenses, while 128 were reportedly neutralized through electronic jamming systems. Despite these defensive measures, the attack claimed the life of a woman in the Kyiv region and left at least three others injured, according to regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk.
The drone barrage comes on the heels of the first direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv in several years, which took place on Friday. However, the talks failed to result in any progress toward a ceasefire, and the intensification of attacks has further dashed hopes of immediate de-escalation.
Ukrainian authorities have condemned the attack as a deliberate attempt to destabilize the region and demoralize civilians, particularly after diplomatic efforts appeared to reach a deadlock. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and emergency response teams continue to operate in affected areas.
The attack underscores the continued volatility of the conflict and highlights the growing role of drone warfare in the Russia-Ukraine war. With no ceasefire in sight, international observers are calling for renewed efforts toward diplomatic resolution as tensions continue to soar.
