In a series of overnight attacks, Ukrainian missiles and drones targeted Russia’s Kursk region, according to local officials. Regional governor Alexei Smirnov reported on Telegram that air defense systems intercepted two Ukrainian missiles and destroyed three drones.
The escalation follows a significant incursion into Russia by Ukrainian forces on Tuesday. Moscow’s defense ministry revealed that around 300 Ukrainian troops, supported by 11 tanks and over 20 armored vehicles, crossed the border into Kursk. This incursion led to clashes that resulted in five deaths and approximately 28 injuries, as confirmed by Smirnov and local health authorities.
The Kursk region, situated near Ukraine’s Sumy region, has experienced heightened tensions and attacks recently. Ukrainian drones also targeted residential buildings in Voronezh and Belgorod, causing damage but no reported casualties.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of sporadic incursions and attacks that have marked the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine since the invasion began in February 2022. Combatants from Ukraine, including units from the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom of Russia Legion, have carried out several cross-border operations in recent months.
