A Russian drone strike on a civilian bus in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region has left nine people dead and four others injured, local military officials confirmed on Saturday. The attack marks yet another tragic instance of civilian casualties amid the ongoing conflict.
The Sumy Regional Military Administration reported the incident via a Telegram post, stating:
“Unfortunately, as a result of a cynical attack by Russians on a bus with civilians, there are dead.” Initially, the administration had reported eight fatalities, but later confirmed the death toll had risen to nine, with four additional victims receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the strike.
The targeted vehicle was reportedly transporting civilians when it was struck by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), further underscoring concerns about the increasing use of drones in frontline and civilian areas. The Sumy region, which shares a border with Russia, has seen repeated attacks since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Ukrainian authorities have condemned the attack as another deliberate assault on non-combatants and called on the international community to strengthen support for Ukraine’s defense and airspace protection systems.
The identities of the victims have not yet been made public, and investigations into the specifics of the drone used and the circumstances of the strike are ongoing.
This deadly incident adds to the growing toll of civilian casualties in Ukraine and highlights the continued vulnerability of non-military targets, even in areas far from the frontline fighting.
