Robert Maudsley, the notorious serial killer known as “Hannibal the Cannibal,” has reportedly gone on a hunger strike after prison authorities confiscated his PlayStation, TV, books, and music system. The 71-year-old, who holds the world record for the longest time spent in solitary confinement, is refusing food in protest.
Possessions Taken During Prison Search
According to Maudsley’s brother, Paul Maudsley, the prison-wide search occurred after rumors of a gun being smuggled inside. “Bob’s section was out for a couple of days. When he finally got back to his cell, they had taken everything—his TV, PlayStation, books, and radio,” Paul told Mirror UK.
Maudsley, known for his “polite” demeanor, allegedly complained to the officers, which resulted in accusations of being abusive. His brother criticized the decision, stating that Maudsley relies on these items to keep himself mentally engaged. “He loves playing war games and chess on his PlayStation. He’s always watching old films and reading factual books,” Paul added.
Maudsley’s Hunger Strike
In response to the removal of his possessions, Maudsley has vowed not to eat until his items are returned. “I’m going on hunger strike, so don’t be surprised if this is the last time I call you,” he reportedly told Paul.
Who Is Robert Maudsley?
Robert Maudsley, often referred to as Britain’s most dangerous inmate, has been in solitary confinement for nearly 46 years. Originally sentenced in 1974 for the murder of child abuser John Farrell, he later killed three fellow inmates whom he believed were rapists and pedophiles.
Due to his violent nature, Maudsley has been housed in a specially designed 18ft by 15ft glass cell, where he spends 23 hours a day in isolation. His strict confinement has been compared to “being buried alive in a coffin.”
