Tesla, the global EV pioneer, has officially entered the Indian automobile market by launching its first model the Tesla Model Y. The company has set up shop in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, one of the city’s top business hubs. It has also established a service centre and a warehouse nearby to ensure after-sales support for customers.
Tesla Kicks Off with Model Y in Two Variants
The Model Y is being offered in two premium variants, both imported as fully built units from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory:
- Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) — ₹59.89 lakh
- Long-Range RWD — ₹67.89 lakh
(All prices ex-showroom)
These variants are tailored to meet the expectations of luxury EV buyers in India.
Performance Metrics: Quick, Efficient, and Capable
Tesla’s Model Y offers impressive specs for the Indian market:
- Maximum Speed: 201 kmph
- Acceleration (0–100 kmph):
- RWD: 5.9 seconds
- Long-Range RWD: 5.6 seconds
- Battery Range:
- Up to 500 km (RWD)
- Up to 622 km (Long-Range RWD)
These numbers make it competitive with both EVs and traditional luxury SUVs.
Price Disparity: Why India Pays More
In the United States, the Model Y starts at around $37,490, which is approximately ₹32.18 lakh. In contrast, Indian prices are nearly double, primarily due to high import duties of up to 70%. That said, if Tesla chooses to assemble cars locally in the future, prices may become more competitive.
Personalization Options: Colours and Interiors
Tesla offers a range of colours, but customization comes at an added cost:
- Standard Colour: Stealth Grey
- Additional Colour Options (extra cost):
- Pearl White Multi-Coat
- Diamond Black
- Glacier Blue
- Quick Silver
- Ultra Red
Interior themes include:
- All-Black (standard)
- Black & White (₹95,000 additional)
Tech-Filled Interior: Built for Comfort and Control
Inside, the Model Y offers a sleek, tech-driven environment:
- 15.4-inch central touchscreen
- 8-inch rear-seat display
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Heated, power-folding second-row seats
- Ambient lighting and aluminium finish accents
- Hands-free smart trunk system
- Front trunk (frunk) for extra storage
Tesla’s signature minimalist layout is paired with luxury materials and intuitive controls.
Self-Driving Capability: Not Yet, But On the Horizon
Currently, Indian customers won’t have access to Tesla’s Autopilot or Full Self-Driving features. However, once the tech is cleared for use in India, customers will be able to purchase it separately for ₹6 lakh.
Flexible Ownership Through Financing Plans
To ease the purchase process, Tesla is offering EMI-based financing options:
- RWD Version:
- EMI: ₹1,14,098/month
- Downpayment: ₹6,20,314
- Long-Range RWD Version:
- EMI: ₹1,29,193/month
- Downpayment: ₹7,01,115
These finance plans are designed to attract young professionals and EV enthusiasts.
