Turkey Linked to Pakistan’s Military Escalation Against India

-

India has raised alarm over Turkey’s growing military involvement with Pakistan after an unprecedented escalation of hostilities along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border. During a special press briefing on Operation Sindoor, Indian officials revealed that 300–400 Turkish-origin drones were used by Pakistan to target both civilian and military locations across India’s western front, from Ladakh to Gujarat.

Initial forensic examination of drone debris recovered from various interception sites has confirmed that many of the drones were Asis Guard Songar models manufactured in Turkey. These drones, capable of offensive action, were used in coordinated airspace violations at 36 locations across multiple states, the government said.

“India’s armed forces successfully neutralised many of these drones using both kinetic and non-kinetic means,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. “These provocative and escalatory actions taken by Pakistan last night were targeted at Indian cities, civilian infrastructure, and military targets.”

Turkey’s Strategic Alignment with Pakistan

Concerns over Ankara’s growing defense ties with Islamabad have intensified as India outlined a pattern of Turkish backing for Pakistan’s military activities, particularly those linked to terror operations against India. Notably, Turkey was the only country to express solidarity with Pakistan following India’s precision missile response — Operation Sindoor — which targeted terror camps across the border.

In a statement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the Indian strikes as causing the “martyrdom of numerous civilians” and offered condolences to Pakistan — a position that starkly contrasted with the global community’s condemnation of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

Military Aid and Presence

The Indian government cited a series of Turkish actions that raised serious concerns:

  • Military Deliveries: Six Turkish military aircraft reportedly landed in Pakistan following the terror attack, allegedly carrying weapons and supplies. Although Turkey denied transporting arms, air traffic monitoring confirmed the presence of its C-130 aircraft.
  • Naval Posturing: Turkish corvette TCG Bykada docked at Karachi Port shortly after the strike, in what Turkey called a “routine visit” and Pakistan hailed as a “gesture of goodwill.”
  • Arms Sales: In 2023 alone, Pakistan officially purchased $5.16 million worth of Turkish arms. This includes Bayraktar TB2 and Akinci drones, and four MILGEM-class corvettes — two of which have already been delivered.

India sees these moves not only as signs of deepening defense cooperation but also as a deliberate alignment with Pakistan’s aggressive posture and its narrative on Kashmir.

Diplomatic Implications

The growing Ankara-Islamabad axis has become a focal point of India’s strategic and diplomatic discourse. Officials accuse Turkey of aiding and abetting cross-border terrorism by providing Islamabad with sophisticated military hardware and ideological support.

Turkey’s silence following the killing of Indian civilians in the Pahalgam attack, and its swift diplomatic support for Pakistan post-Operation Sindoor, have further fuelled concerns over Ankara’s intentions in the region.

As India continues its forensic investigation into the drones and strengthens its border surveillance, the diplomatic strain with Turkey appears poised to escalate — with New Delhi now closely monitoring every signal emerging from Ankara.
