US Slams Russia for Deadly Missile Strike on Sumy, Calls Civilian Attack 'Beyond Decency

Top US officials have sharply condemned a deadly Russian missile strike that devastated the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday morning, calling it a brutal assault on civilians that “crosses any line of decency.”

According to Ukrainian authorities, at least 34 people were killed and nearly 120 injured in the missile barrage, which struck residential and public areas in the city center. The attack is among the most lethal strikes Ukraine has witnessed in recent months.

Keith Kellogg, the US special envoy to Ukraine and a retired lieutenant general, expressed outrage over the targeting of civilians. “As a former military leader, I understand targeting — and this is wrong,” Kellogg said in a post on social media platform X. “There are scores of civilian dead and wounded. This crosses any line of decency.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also responded to the incident, offering condolences and reiterating Washington’s commitment to ending the war. “The United States extends our deepest condolences to the victims of today’s horrifying Russian missile attack on Sumy,” Rubio posted on X. “This is a tragic reminder of why President Trump and his administration are putting so much time and effort into trying to end this war and achieve durable peace.”

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts by the Trump administration to broker a ceasefire, significant progress remains elusive. Russia has shown little willingness to make concessions in the negotiations, and Sunday’s attack is likely to further strain diplomatic channels.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike as a “war crime” and urged the international community to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow. “The deliberate targeting of civilians will not go unpunished,” he said in an official statement.

The Russian government has not yet issued a formal response to the allegations.

As the war drags on into its third year, attacks on civilian infrastructure continue to escalate, intensifying global pressure on Moscow and heightening calls for a peaceful resolution.
