The Vatican has provided an update on Pope Francis’ health, confirming that the 88-year-old pontiff is showing signs of “slight improvement” despite battling pneumonia in both his lungs. He remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital but is reportedly alert and in stable condition.
According to a Vatican spokesperson, Pope Francis slept well through the night and was able to have his breakfast while seated in an armchair. Recent blood tests have also shown minor signs of improvement, offering hope for his recovery.
Pope Francis in Good Spirits
A Vatican official assured that Pope Francis is not on a ventilator and has been breathing on his own. He has also been able to move around his hospital room and take phone calls while continuing to do paperwork.
On Wednesday, February 19, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the pope and later described him as “alert and responsive.” She even revealed that Francis had joked about people betting on his death, demonstrating that he “hasn’t lost his proverbial sense of humor.”
Health Complications Due to Age
Pope Francis was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after experiencing worsening symptoms of bronchitis, which led to breathing difficulties. Given his advanced age, his condition has been closely monitored by doctors. The Vatican acknowledged the complexity of his medical situation, stating that his laboratory tests and chest X-ray results require continuous observation.
Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis remains in good spirits and is grateful for the outpouring of prayers and support from around the world. Over the years, he has faced several health issues, but his resilience and positive outlook continue to inspire the Catholic community.
