6.7-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Offshore Near Papua New Guinea

    -

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at a depth of 51 kilometers (31.6 miles) and was located approximately 123.2 kilometers from Kokopo, the nearest town.

The Papua New Guinea National Disaster Centre reported that assessments were underway to determine any damage caused by the tremor. Fortunately, no tsunami warnings were issued following the earthquake, easing concerns of immediate coastal impacts.

Papua New Guinea is situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for its intense seismic activity due to tectonic plate movements. While earthquakes are common in the area, their effects are often limited due to the country’s sparse population. However, these tremors carry the risk of triggering destructive landslides, particularly in vulnerable regions.
