The much-anticipated grand opening of Dream Bazaar Mall in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Johar area turned into a scene of chaos and destruction on its very first day. The newly built mall, heavily promoted on social media and offering special discounts to attract shoppers, was ransacked and looted by an unruly mob shortly after it opened its doors at 3:00 PM.
Videos circulating online show hundreds of people storming into the mall, vandalizing property, and looting stores with little to no resistance. Staff members attempted to manage the crowd, but their efforts were overwhelmed as people forced their way into the stores, grabbing merchandise and shoving items into bags or carrying them away in their arms.
Eyewitnesses reported that despite the widespread commotion and destruction, there was a conspicuous absence of police at the scene, leaving the mall’s staff helpless against the mob. The aftermath of the rampage revealed a devastating scene: shattered glass littered the premises, clothes were scattered across the floors, and the entire building was left in shambles.
The footage of the looting sparked a heated debate online, with many expressing shock and disgust at the lawlessness displayed. Social media users condemned the behavior, with some questioning the state of civic morals in the country.
One user commented, “What else can you expect from a country where lawlessness is the norm? A place where even a generous gesture turns into chaos. This incident speaks volumes about the state of affairs in Pakistan.”
Another added, “It’s unfortunate to see such an exciting development turn into a chaotic situation. While the intention behind offering special discounts to locals was admirable, it’s clear that better planning and security measures were needed to prevent the mall from being looted.”
The incident has highlighted the need for better crowd control and security planning for large public events in the future, especially in a country where such incidents can quickly escalate into chaos.
