On Monday, President Joe Biden hosted a grand Diwali celebration at the White House, welcoming over 600 distinguished Indian Americans, including Congress members, government officials, and corporate leaders from across the nation. The event highlighted the significant contributions of the South Asian American community to American society.
In the Blue Room, President Biden lit a formal diya and expressed his deep appreciation for the South Asian American community, stating, “You have enriched every part of American life.” He reflected on the historical significance of the Diwali celebration in the White House, recalling how it began during his vice presidency in 2016 amidst a climate of hostility towards immigrants.
Addressing the attendees in a packed East Room, Biden remarked, “As President, I’ve been honored to host the biggest Diwali receptions ever at the White House. It means a great deal to me.” He acknowledged the importance of representation within his administration, citing figures like Vice President Kamala Harris and Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, who have roots in the South Asian American community.
Although Vice President Harris and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden were unable to attend due to campaigning commitments, the celebration included a recorded message from astronaut Sunita Williams, who shared her greetings from the International Space Station. Youth activist Shrusti Amula introduced the President, underscoring the event’s significance for young Indian Americans.
Biden’s speech touched on themes of resilience and unity, noting the duality of America’s journey as a nation. “We also know today we face an inflection point… every generation has been called to move us forward,” he said, emphasizing the importance of upholding the ideals of democracy and diversity.
In closing, President Biden remarked on the spirit of America, highlighting the courage and aspirations of its people. He expressed his commitment to channeling that spirit through his presidency, aiming to guide the nation through challenging times and to connect different generations in shared experiences and dreams.
This year’s Diwali celebration not only honored the festival of lights but also reinforced the unity and strength of the diverse American landscape.
