Boeing is set to unveil its newest widebody aircraft, the 777-9, at the upcoming Wings India air show in Hyderabad. The aircraft, part of Boeing’s successful 777X family, is making its debut in India and will be showcased from January 18 to 19, following its arrival in Hyderabad on January 16.
According to Boeing, Air India is set to receive 10 of the 777-9s as part of an order placed in 2023, although specific timelines for delivery were not provided in the statement released on Friday. The Wings India air show, organized by the civil aviation ministry and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), is recognized as one of Asia’s premier civil aviation events.
The 777-9 flight test airplane, based on the highly successful 777 model and incorporating advanced technologies from the 787 Dreamliner family, is positioned as the world’s largest and most efficient twin-engine jet, as highlighted by Boeing. The aircraft’s debut in Hyderabad underscores the growing importance of the Indian market in the aviation industry.
“Air India will receive 10 777-9s, as part of the carrier’s substantial order placed in 2023, aimed at bolstering its fleet strategy and meeting the growing demand for international air travel in the rapidly expanding South Asian market,” Boeing stated in its release.
The 777X family, which includes the 777-8 and 777-9 passenger models, along with the 777-8 Freighter, has garnered more than 450 orders, showcasing the strong demand for Boeing’s advanced twin-aisle airplanes.
Salil Gupte, President of Boeing India, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting India’s civil aviation growth. “Our dedication to bolstering India’s civil aviation growth remains unwavering, providing efficient aircraft, top-notch services, and innovative solutions in line with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision,” Gupte said.
In addition to the aircraft display, Boeing will also showcase the 777X passenger interior at the Wings India air show. The presence of the 777-9 at this prominent event reflects Boeing’s strategic efforts to contribute to India’s aviation sector and align with the vision of a self-reliant India.
