Four Dalits Hung Upside Down, Beaten Over Alleged Theft of Goat and Pigeons in Maharashtra

A shocking incident has emerged from Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district where four Dalit men were reportedly hanged upside down from a tree and brutally beaten with sticks by a group of six individuals. The attack was allegedly carried out over suspicions of the Dalit men being involved in the theft of a goat and some pigeons. A video of the assault has circulated on social media, leading to outrage and demands for justice.

According to local authorities, on August 25, six individuals from the village confronted the Dalit men, all in their 20s, at their homes and forcibly took them along. Subsequently, the victims were subjected to a heinous assault where they were hung upside down from a tree and mercilessly beaten with sticks. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and protests in the area.

One of the accused reportedly captured the brutal attack on video, which later surfaced on social media platforms. The disturbing footage has further fueled public anger and triggered demands for swift action against those responsible.

On Saturday, one person was arrested in connection with the incident, while five others remain at large, as per an official statement from the Ahmednagar police. The victims were later taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Shubham Magade, one of the victims, filed a formal complaint with the police regarding the incident.

The incident prompted a shutdown in Haregaon village in Shrirampur taluka as a form of protest against the violence and discrimination faced by Dalit communities. Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), have strongly condemned the incident. The Congress labeled the attack a “blot” on humanity and alleged that it is a consequence of divisive narratives promoted by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A case has been registered under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 364 (kidnapping), and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, along with the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Leaders from various political parties have demanded the immediate arrest of all accused and stringent punishment for the perpetrators.
