Days After India Visit, Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Visits China for Strategic Talks with Xi Jinping

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina in China for Strategic Talks with President Xi Jinping

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has arrived in China for a four-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral strategic ties. During her stay, she will engage in high-level discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

The official BSS news agency reported that Hasina’s visit will cover a wide range of bilateral, regional, and international issues. This visit comes just 15 days after her trip to India from June 21 to 22. The Bangladeshi Prime Minister last met President Xi on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.

On Wednesday, Hasina is scheduled to hold separate meetings with Xi and Li at the Great Hall of the People, where they will discuss the comprehensive bilateral relationship. Following these talks, both nations are expected to sign and renew 20 to 22 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).

“The MoUs will cover cooperation in economic and banking sectors, trade and investment, digital economy, infrastructure development, disaster management assistance, construction of the 6th and 9th Bangladesh-China friendship bridges, export of Bangladeshi agricultural products, and enhancing people-to-people connectivity,” stated Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud at a recent press conference.

The visit will also see the announcement of several joint projects. Discussions are anticipated to focus heavily on business, trade, commerce, and development, with particular attention to the Rohingya issue.

This is Prime Minister Hasina’s fourth visit to China, with expectations to elevate the relationship from a “strategic partnership” to a “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.” Next year, the two countries will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.

On Tuesday, China’s top political advisor Wang Huning met with Hasina in Beijing. Wang, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), emphasized the mutual respect and equality that characterize China-Bangladesh relations. He expressed China’s readiness to deepen practical cooperation in various fields and push the strategic partnership to new heights for the benefit of both nations.
